Understanding Neck Pain: Types, Complaints, and Finding Relief
Neck pain is a surprisingly common problem that can affect anyone, regardless of age or activity level. From a nagging ache to intense stiffness and pain, it can make everyday activities challenging. If you’re experiencing neck pain, understanding potential causes and finding the right treatment is key to finding lasting relief.
What is Neck Pain?
Neck pain refers to any pain, discomfort, or stiffness felt in the region of the cervical spine. Your neck is a complex and surprisingly delicate structure of bones, muscles, ligaments, and nerves. This complexity makes it prone to strains, injuries, and various degenerative conditions.
Types of Neck Pain
Pains in your neck can stem from numerous causes, including:
- Injuries: Sudden events like whiplash from car accidents, sports injuries, or falls can cause:
- Muscle strains and ligament sprains
- Disc herniation
- Degenerative Conditions: Osteoarthritis and other degenerative diseases lead to gradual wear-and-tear, causing pain and stiffness.
- Posture & Overuse: Poor posture, especially when sitting at a desk for prolonged periods, puts excess stress on neck muscles.
- Other Causes: Medical conditions like fibromyalgia or infections can also contribute to neck pain.
Common Complaints of Neck Pain
Pain in your neck can manifest in various ways. Individuals might experience:
- Pain localised to a specific area or radiating throughout the neck
- Muscle stiffness, tightness, and spasms
- Reduced range of motion and difficulty turning your head
- Pain that worsens with certain movements or prolonged positions
- Headaches
- Pain, tingling, or numbness radiating into the shoulders or arms

Attention
We will go above and beyond to get you in for an appointment, but due to high Physio demand in the NHS our appointments are in HIGH demand and go fast.
Current NHS waiting lists for Physiotherapy are at around 6700 patients, to put that into context, if 20 NHS physios see 10 patients a day, that’s 200 appointments a day, 1000 appointments a week over 5 days
Thats nearly 7 weeks wait for only 1 appointment (and we all know that it’s going to be double the time).
Does this sound like you?
Trust us, we have seen and heard everything, some of the common things people say to us include:
- I just thought the pain would go away after a while, but it's still there.
- I went to the Doctor and all he gave me was some tablets, I was then told to rest, and he has referred me for Physio, but there’s a 2-month waiting list.
- There’s no point even trying to get a doctor's appointment, they don’t even pick up the phone.
- I felt it stiffen up, so I rested for a few days, and it went, but as soon as I did something it came back.
