Understanding Knee Pain: Types, Complaints, and Finding Relief
Knee pain is a remarkably common problem, affecting people of all ages and activity levels. Whether it’s a nagging ache or a sharp, debilitating pain, it can put a serious damper on your daily life. If you’re struggling with knee pain, understanding its potential causes and finding the right treatment approach is key.
What is Knee Pain?
Itrefers to any discomfort, soreness, or pain you feel in or around the knee joint. Your knee is a complex hinge joint where your thigh bone (femur) meets your shin bone (tibia). It relies on a network of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and muscles for stability and smooth movement, making it susceptible to various problems and injuries.
Types of Knee Pain
Knee pain can fall into several categories:
- Injuries: Sudden events like sports injuries, falls, or awkward twisting can cause:
- Ligament tears (Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), MCL, etc.)
- Meniscus tears
- Tendonitis
- Fractures
- Arthritis: Degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can lead to inflammation, pain, and stiffness.
- Overuse Injuries: Repetitive strain from activities like running, jumping, or kneeling can cause conditions like patellofemoral pain syndrome.
- Other Causes: Bursitis, infections, and certain medical conditions can also contribute to knee pain.
Common Complaints of Knee Pain
People experiencing pain in their knee describe a variety of symptoms, including:
- Aching or sharp pain inside or around the knee
- Swelling and stiffness
- Popping, clicking, or grinding sensations
- Knee giving way or buckling
- Difficulty walking, running, or climbing stairs
- Pain that worsens with activity
- Pain, swelling, numbness, or tingling in the calf
- Inability to fully straighten the knee

Attention
We will go above and beyond to get you in for an appointment, but due to high Physio demand in the NHS our appointments are in HIGH demand and go fast.
Current NHS waiting lists for Physiotherapy are at around 6700 patients, to put that into context, if 20 NHS physios see 10 patients a day, that’s 200 appointments a day, 1000 appointments a week over 5 days
Thats nearly 7 weeks wait for only 1 appointment (and we all know that it’s going to be double the time).
Does this sound like you?
Trust us, we have seen and heard everything, some of the common things people say to us include:
- I just thought the pain would go away after a while, but it's still there.
- I went to the Doctor and all he gave me was some tablets, I was then told to rest, and he has referred me for Physio, but there’s a 2-month waiting list.
- There’s no point even trying to get a doctor's appointment, they don’t even pick up the phone.
- I felt it stiffen up, so I rested for a few days, and it went, but as soon as I did something it came back.
