Understanding Hip Pain: Types, Symptoms, and Finding Relief
Pain in your hip is a frustratingly common problem, affecting people of all activity levels and ages. From a dull ache to sharp, debilitating pain, it can significantly limit your mobility and overall quality of life. If you’re struggling with hip pain, understanding its potential causes and finding effective treatment options is crucial.
What is Hip Pain?
Hip pain refers to any discomfort, soreness, or pain you experience in or around your hip joint. Your hip is a large ball-and-socket joint where the top of your thigh bone (femur) meets your pelvis. A network of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cushioning cartilage support this joint, leaving it vulnerable to various injuries and conditions.
Types of Hip Pain
Hip discomfort can be caused by a wide range of factors:
- Injuries: Sudden trauma from sports, falls, or accidents can lead to:
- Strains and sprains
- Fractures
- Labral tears (injury to the cartilage ring around the hip socket)
- Arthritis: Degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis cause inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joint.
- Overuse Injuries: Repetitive strain on the hip joint from activities like running can lead to:
- Bursitis (inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs around the joint)
- Tendonitis (inflammation of the tendons)
- Other Causes: Medical conditions like avascular necrosis (bone tissue death) or infections can also contribute to hip pain.
Common Complaints of Hip Pain
People with hip pain may experience various symptoms, including:
- Pain deep in the hip joint, in the groin, or on the side of the hip
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion
- Pain that worsens with activity or prolonged standing
- Limping or altered gait
- Clicking or popping sensations in the hip
- Pain radiating down the leg (sometimes related to sciatica)

Attention
We will go above and beyond to get you in for an appointment, but due to high Physio demand in the NHS our appointments are in HIGH demand and go fast.
Current NHS waiting lists for Physiotherapy are at around 6700 patients, to put that into context, if 20 NHS physios see 10 patients a day, that’s 200 appointments a day, 1000 appointments a week over 5 days
Thats nearly 7 weeks wait for only 1 appointment (and we all know that it’s going to be double the time).
Does this sound like you?
Trust us, we have seen and heard everything, some of the common things people say to us include:
- I just thought the pain would go away after a while, but it's still there.
- I went to the Doctor and all he gave me was some tablets, I was then told to rest, and he has referred me for Physio, but there’s a 2-month waiting list.
- There’s no point even trying to get a doctor's appointment, they don’t even pick up the phone.
- I felt it stiffen up, so I rested for a few days, and it went, but as soon as I did something it came back.
