What Are Hyaluronic Acid Joint Injections?

Hyaluronic acid joint injections are a type of treatment used to alleviate pain and improve mobility in individuals suffering from joint-related conditions, particularly osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the synovial fluid of joints, acting as a lubricant and shock absorber. These injections supplement the body’s supply of hyaluronic acid, helping to restore joint function and reduce discomfort.

Who Can Benefit from These Injections?

Hyaluronic acid injections are primarily recommended for:

Individuals with mild to moderate osteoarthritis.

Those who experience chronic joint pain, particularly in the knees, hips, or shoulders.

Patients who have not found adequate relief from other treatments, such as pain relievers or physical therapy.

People seeking to delay or avoid surgical intervention, such as joint replacement.

How Do These Injections Work?

Hyaluronic acid joint injections work by:

Enhancing lubrication within the joint, reducing friction and wear.

Supporting the cushioning of bones, which alleviates pain during movement.

Stimulating the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid in the treated area.

Improving overall joint function and mobility over time.

Hyaluronic Acid Joint Injections Procedure Overview

Preparation for Hyaluronic Acid Joint Injections

Before the injection procedure, your healthcare provider may assess your medical history and conduct a physical examination of the affected joint. Imaging tests, like X-rays or MRIs, may be performed to confirm the diagnosis of osteoarthritis or other joint issues.

The Injection Process

The procedure is typically quick.

The area around the joint is cleaned thoroughly to prevent infection.

The hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the joint space using a fine needle.

Post-Injection Care

Patients are typically advised to rest the treated joint fully for 24 hours following the procedure.

Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a few days.

Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider for optimal recovery.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Pain Relief: Many individuals report a significant reduction in pain within weeks of treatment.

Improved Mobility: Enhanced joint function allows patients to resume daily activities with greater ease.

Non-Surgical Solution: This treatment serves as an alternative to invasive procedures, such as joint replacement.

Minimal Downtime: Patients can typically return to their routines shortly after the injection.

Potential Risks and Side Effects of Hyaluronic Acid Joint Injections

While hyaluronic acid injections are generally safe, some individuals may experience:

Temporary pain or swelling at the injection site.

Mild redness or irritation.

Rarely, infection or allergic reactions.

In some cases, the treatment may not provide the desired results.

Always discuss potential risks with your healthcare provider before proceeding.

Results and Expectations

Relief from symptoms typically begins within 2-4 weeks after treatment.

Improvements in joint function can last for several months.

Regular follow-ups may be required to evaluate the effectiveness of the injections.

FAQs

How often can I receive these injections?

Patients might receive injections every 6-12 months, depending on your Physio’s recommendation and the severity of their condition. Most patients typically receive a series of 1 to 3 Hyaluronic Acid Joint Injections spaced about a week apart. Some individuals may require additional courses of treatment, especially if symptoms recur, while others may experience lasting relief after just one injection.

Conclusion

Hyaluronic acid joint injections offer a promising solution for those seeking relief from joint pain and improved mobility. By replenishing the body’s natural lubrication, these injections help manage the symptoms of conditions like osteoarthritis and enhance overall quality of life. Always consult with your healthcare provider to determine if this treatment is right for you.

At ThePhysiotherapyDOC we LOVE to help people. We use many different approaches including massage, cupping, spinal mobilisations, and acupuncture.

What are Spinal Manipulations?

Spinal manipulations are a technique used by the Physio where they use their hands to provide a ‘thrust’ to a specific joint in your spine. The amount of force generated by the Physio depends on what is needed.

What is the ‘CLICK’? What does it do?

The ‘Click’, is actually called a ‘Cavitation’. A joint in your body is made up of connecting bones, joints are surrounded by a capsule containing a fluid call ‘synovial fluid’ this fluid acts in a similar way as oil does to a car engine….it lubricates. Inside this fluid are tine little carbon dioxide filled gas pockets. When the Physio provides the ‘thrust’ the gas escapes from the joint, creating the noise of a click.

Does it hurt?

No, it doesn’t hurt, patients tend to experience a feeling of ‘instant relief when receiving this treatment. It can be a bit uncomfortable when getting it for the 1st time as people don’t know what to expect, but once you have had it, you will be addicted and want it all the time.

We know how difficult it is to even get an appointment at the doctors, never mind seeing a Physio, and when you do, all you get given is painkillers and the odd exercise.

We are not a fan of people having to ‘survive’ on painkillers to get through the day, it puts you on to a road to nowhere and eventually ends in people having a significantly poorer level of quality of life. We are a HUGE believer in hands on treatment and we tailor our sessions to be mainly hands on because that’s what we are experts at, exercises and stretches can be done in your own time, when you’re with us, we get straight to work on easing your pain.

When pain happens, we know it’s very easy to just take some paracetamol and get through the day, or even just ignore it and hope it will just get better, go away, or be sorted by rest or a good night’s sleep.

Sadly, this is never the case, 1 of the things we find ourselves saying to patients all the time is how we still haven’t worked out the reason as to why we don’t get help straight away for our pain. If the car makes a grinding noise, its booked in the garage that day. Your phone screen flickers…. hello repair shop, but when our body aches, creaks, cracks and pops with pain, what do we do? “Ahhh it’ll be ok”. The body is the most important thing of all that we need to look after, and we don’t.

Pain happens for a reason, it’s our body’s way of alerting us to an issue that needs looking at, don’t ignore it, get it looked at, 1000’s of people who have given us the chance to help them have all said how they can’t believe how bad they were, and wonder how they got through the day at work, or survived on so little sleep because the pain they were in was taking over their life.

At ThePhysiotherapyDOC we LOVE to help people. We use many different approaches including massage, cupping, spinal mobilisations and acupuncture.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture treatment has stood the test of time for 1000’s of years, there are 2 main types, the Chinese method which mainly focuses on specific acupuncture points which are linked with ‘meridians’ and ‘energy flow’, and a more western technique called Dry Needling which involves a direct application of a needle to a specific tissue or muscle bulk.

What does Acupuncture do?

When the needle has been inserted, it stimulates sensory nerves that are underneath the skin, causing a release of pain-relieving endorphins from the brain which help dampen you pain response and also helps muscle tissue relax.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, and most people report minimal levels of pain when experiencing their treatment. When you get an injection using a standard hypodermic needle, it tends to be sore, this is due to the needle ‘cutting through’ tissue causing trauma. Acupuncture needles are so thin, they ‘separate’ tissue, causing no trauma.

At ThePhysiotherapyDOC we LOVE to help people. We use many different approaches including massage, cupping, spinal mobilisations, and acupuncture.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is an ancient treatment technique that involves the use of heated glass cups which are applied to the body along specific ‘meridian lines’, the heat creates a ‘suction’ which draws the skin and tissues of the body outwards.

What does Cupping do?

The use of suction draws blood to, or away from specific areas of the body, this can help facilitate pain relief and also is a very effective recovery treatment, especially after a heavy bout of training or exercise.

Does Cupping Hurt? What are the bruises?

No, it doesn’t hurt, patients tend to experience a feeling of ‘tightness’ on the skin. The bruises are painless and can remain for anything between a few days to 2-3 weeks.
